Training Properly For Your Sport - Part 1

By Josh Luck

People tend to think basic movements like the bench press and bicep curl are sufficient exercises for the strength to carry over into their sport. That is were they are mistaken. Take a look at your sport and identify the force requirements needed to be successful.

If a football player bangs out a 300lb bench and is incredibly strong, what is his actual carry over to football? Benching 300lbs with a stabilized piece of wood behind his back is totally different than pushing a 300lb object in the upright position without support. If I were to take that same athlete and place him at a cable column with a pulley set at chest height, how much could he push with good form? I bet it isn’t 300lbs. See what I mean!

Your training environment should be the exact replica of your performance on the field or court. To become a better athlete in your sport you have to be better at performing movements that are displayed during play. Take a look around your gym, what movement exercises allow for you to mimic a position or challenge your sport technique? With a little creativity and thought, you will be pushing forward in no time. Don’t limit yourself to what everyone else is doing; push yourself to be the best!!

Testimonials

"I was going into my eighth year of professional basketball and knew that I needed a competitive advantage. I'd heard of Josh through some other athletes I trusted and thought why not? After a summer with Josh, I realize now he pushed me to new levels of strength, agility, and endurance that transferred directly to better play on the court. Even when you are 30 and trying to maintain an edge, Josh knew exactly how to get me there. I thank him for spending the time and sharing his passion with me in helping me reach my athletic goals."
